Sept. 7, 2016

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - University of Connecticut redshirt junior quarterback Bryant Shirreffs (Jefferson, Ga.) was selected as the New England Football Writers' Association Gold Helmet winner in FBS/FCS for his performance in the Huskies’ opening weekend win vs. Maine.

The award is sponsored by the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation and given weekly to the top FBS/FCS and Division II/III players in New England.

In the 24-21 victory against Maine on September 1, Shirreffs went 16 for 23 in the air and finished the game with 162 yards of passing and 95 rushing yards. Shirreffs had no interceptions and carried the ball to a team-high 20 times for a team-high of 95 yards. The Gold Helmet is the second of Shirreffs’ career as he won last year for his performance vs. Villanova on September 3.

UConn returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Navy for a 3:30 p.m. game on CBS Sports Network and the UConn IMG Sports Radio Network.

Stephen Beahn of Framingham State was the Division II-III winner.
