DANBURY, Conn. -
University of Connecticut senior safety Obi Melifonwu (South Grafton, Mass.) and senior wide receiver Noel Thomas, Jr. (Norwalk, Conn.) have both been named to the 2016 ECAC FBS All-Star Team.
This honor for the UConn duo adds to a long list of recognitions that they have earned for the 2016 season. Melifonwu was a First Team All-American Athletic Conference honoree while Thomas was named second team. Thomas and Melifonwu also earned All-New England honors – Thomas for the second-straight year. Thomas will receive the Bulger Lowe Award next Thursday, Dec. 14 from the Gridiron Club of Boston as the top player in New England.
Melifonwu and Thomas will both participate in post-season all-star games. Thomas was recently invited to play in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, which will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017 at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., with kickoff at 4 p.m. Eastern time. The game will be televised on FS1.
Melifonwu was previously invited to the play in the Reese’s Senior Bowl, which will be played on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. Central and will be televised on the NFL Network.
Melifonwu led UConn in tackles this past season with 118 and also had a team-leading four interceptions. He is 14th in the country in tackles per game and second in the American Athletic Conference. Melifonwu was also ranked 27th in the country in interceptions. He tied a school single-game record on November 26 with 24 tackles against Tulane.
Thomas led UConn in receiving with a school single-season record 100 receptions for 1,179 yards, which was second. For his career, Thomas had 183 receptions, which is fourth in school history, for 2,235 yards, eighth in school history.
Thomas is fifth in the country in receptions per game at 8.3 and third in the American Athletic Conference. He is also 15th in the country receiving yards per game at 98.3.
