ORLANDO - Wins by senior Jeb Buchanan, junior Brian Hughes, senior Matthew Dziubina, and freshman Chris Wiatr lifted the University of Connecticut men's golf team to a 4-2 victory over Seton Hall Monday in the second round of The Match Play competition at the Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla.
The Huskies rebounded from a first-round loss to Central Arkansas earlier Monday with a solid effort against the Pirates, starting with Buchanan (Loudonville, N.Y.), UConn's No. 1 player, who posted a 1 Up victory over Seton Hall's Brandon Park.
Hughes (Fairfield, Conn.) recorded his second win of the competition as he dominated Seton Hall's Troy Spencer for a 5 & 4 victory, while Dziubina (Shelton, Conn.) also captured his second win of the day with a 3 & 2 triumph over Seton Hall's Derrick Kim. Wiatr (Woodbury, Conn.), who halved his first match, gave the Huskies their final point with a 2 & 1 win over the Pirates' Gary Dunne.
The Huskies narrowly missed a sweep over Seton Hall when senior Matt Carroll (Heathrow, Fla.) and senior Adam Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) lost 1 Up matches to Seton Hall's John Dawson Neufeld and Marc Kunesch, respectively.
Hughes defeated Central Arkansas' David Morago, 1 up, and Dziubina stopped the Bears' Chris Cooke, 3 & 2, while UConn's Wiatr halved his match against Central's Josh Sims, accounting for the UConn points.
UConn continues The Match Play Tuesday at Reunion Resort as the competition concludes with two more rounds.
