ORLANDO - Thanks to a dominating performance by its top four seeded players, the University of Connecticut men's golf team defeated Loyola-Chicago Tuesday to finish BIG EAST Match Play competition with two victories in three matches at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla.
The Huskies' 4-2 win over Loyola followed their split of Monday's competition, a narrow 3.5-2.5 loss to Central Arkansas, followed by a 4-2 win over Seton Hall.
Against Loyola, UConn's top seed, senior Jeb Buchanan (Loudonville, N.Y.), set the tone with an impressive 7&6 triumph over Loyola's No. 1, Charlie Schaffer. It was the second victory of the competition for Buchanan.
Meanwhile, UConn junior Brian Hughes (Fairfield, Conn.) and senior teammate Matthew Dziubina (Shelton, Conn.) each upped his record to a perfect 3-0 in the competition. Hughes recorded a 2-up win over Loyola's Alex Cusumano, while Dziubina was a 2&1 winner over Loyola's Erik Hoops. UConn freshman Chris Wiatr (Woodbury, Conn.) continued his solid performance in the competition with a 4&3 win over Loyola's Sean Hickey. Wiatr earned 2.5 points in his three matches.
Rounding out UConn's match against Loyola, senior Matt Carroll (Heathrow, Fla.) bowed to Loyola's Nick Dennis, 4&3, while UConn senior Adam Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) lost a 2-up decision to Brian Van De Motter.
The Huskies, who will return to Reunion Resort on April 29-May 1 to compete for the BIG EAST Championship, continue their spring schedule on March 12-13, when they travel to Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., to participate in The Farms Invitational.
