PHOENIX, Ariz. - Sparked by matching rounds of 5-under par 67s from sophomore Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.) and junior Chris Wiatr (Woodbury, Conn.), the UConn golf team shot up the leaderboard Tuesday to finish 10thin the Snowman Getaway.
The Huskies shot an aggregate 278 in the third and final round of the 17-team tourney, held on the Palms Valley Course in Phoenix, which tied Gonzaga for the second-best team round of the day, behind only the 273 posted by tourney winner Illinois State.
Zaback (71-70-67-208) shot his third consecutive sub-par round of the tourney, putting himself in a four-way tie for seventh place at 8-under with Jack Howard of Air Force, Brendan Lamp of Loyola-Maryland, and Andrew Havill of Indiana. The overall winner of the event was Ryan McCormick of St. John's, who shot 64-68-69-201.
Wiatr's 67 lifted him into a tie for 50th place (79-74-67-220), when he began the day tied for 83rd after two rounds. UConn sophomore Corey Birch (Ridgefield, Conn.) shot an even-par 72 in the final round for a 74-78-72-224 and freshman Eric Dietrich (Cheshire, Conn.) also shot a 72 for a 79-73-72-224, as both were part of a tie for 65th place. Sophomore John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.) shot 77-76-74-227 to finish tied for 73rd place.
Playing as an individual, UConn's Cameron MacKay (Brookfield, Conn.) finished as part of Wiatr's tie for 50th place in the 100-player field with a 77-72-71-220.
UConn's aggregate 301-293-278-872 was 10th, while Illinois State and Air Force tied for first, each with an 849. Illinois State was declared the winner because of a lower score in the final round.
The Huskies will continue the spring portion of their schedule on March 2-3 when they travel to Bluffton, S.C., to compete in the Colleton River Collegiate on the Dye Course at Colleton River.
