Hwang Leads Huskies After Round One of Ron Smith/USF Invitational

TAMPA, Fla. (March 6, 2009) - Freshman Brian Hwang (Hauppauge, N.Y.) led the University of Connecticut golf team with an even-par round on the first day of the Ron Smith/USF Invitational on Friday. Hwang shot 72 to finish tied for 32nd individually at Jake Jovita Golf Club in Dade City, Fla.

Classmate Jeb Buchanan (Loundonville, N.Y.) also had a good first round, shooting just three-over-par after the first 18 holes. Buchanan is tied for 74th with his round of 75.

Sophomore Matt Dubrowski (Bergenfield, N.J.) and junior Kyle O'Connor (South Windsor, Conn.) both shot five-over to start the competition.

UConn finished 20th among the 23 teams competing ahead of a pair of BIG EAST competitors. The Huskies finished with a 301 round ahead of Seton Hall (22nd) and Cincinnati (23rd). The hosts, University of South Florida, find themselves in 19th (+12) after the first round while Missouri State leads the field with a combined seven-under par (281).

Tee-off for the second round of the Ron Smith/USF Invitational is at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday.
