RALEIGH, N.C. - Junior Brian Hughes (Fairfield, Conn.) shot a 1-under par 71 Sunday to record the best round by a University of Connecticut golfer as the Huskies competed in the Wolfpack Spring Open at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University.
Hughes' performance Sunday gave him a 5-over par 149 for the two-day tournament, lifting him into a tie for 21st place among individual golfers. Luke Jerling of Lamar was the individual medalist with a 5-under par total of 139.
In the team competition, host school North Carolina State topped the 17-team field with an aggregate score of 1-over 577, four strokes better than second-place Lamar (581). East Carolina was third at 585. As a team, UConn finished 14th with a 315-307-622.
UConn senior Matthew Dziubina (Shelton, Conn.) finished in a tie for 57th place with a 12-over par 77-79-156, while freshman Chris Wiatr (Woodbury, Conn.) finished in a tie for 66th place at 14-over 71-77-158.
Also for the Huskies, sophomore Mike Masso (Suffield, Conn.) finished in a tie for 76th place with a 16-over 80-80-160, and senior Matt Carroll (Heathrow, Fla.) tied for 84th place with 20-over 80-84-164.
The Wolfpack Spring Open wraps up regular season competition for UConn. The Huskies will be off until April 29-May1, when they will compete in the BIG EAST Conference championship at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla.
