LECANTO, Fla. --- UConn senior co-captain Zach Zaback picked an opportune time to produce the finest round of his long college career.

Zaback (Farmington, Conn.) tied an American Athletic Conference Championship record Monday as he shot a brilliant 8-under par 64 in the second round to climb 29 spots into sole possession of fourth place on the individual leaderboard with a 3-under 77-64=141, just two shots behind co-leaders Chase Koepka of USF (-5) and Vincent Martino (-5) of Houston. Aksel Olsen (-4) of USF is in third place.

The tournament, taking place at the Quarry Course of the Black Diamond Ranch, has its third and final round on Tuesday.

Zaback, who started his round on No. 10, had four birdies through nine holes, then began his second nine with three consecutive birdies and he had 10 total birdies for the round. He leads the tournament with a total of 11 birdies and he also tops the 45-player field in Par 4 scoring, playing the Par 4 holes in 4-under par. The 64 was the lowest round of his 131-round college career as well as Zaback’s 16th sub-70 round and his 41st round of par or better. Zaback’s 64 tied the record a set last year by SMU’s Bryson Dechambeau, who went on to win the 2015 U.S. Amateur Championship.

UConn junior Eric Dietrich (Cheshire, Conn.) shot his second consecutive even-par 72 (72-72=144) and stands in a tie for 10th place. Also for the Huskies, senior Cameron MacKay (Brookfield, Conn.) is tied for 33rd place with a 75-79=154, while freshman Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) and senior John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.) are both tied for 42nd place with a 79-82=161 and a 78-83=161, respectively.

As a team, UConn heads into Round 3 in seventh place after an aggregate 302-297=599. USF leads the field with a 9-under 285-282=567.
