SOUTH KENT, Conn. - Another competition, another Top Five finish for the UConn men's golf team and another Top 10 individual finish for junior co-captain Jimmy Hervol.
For the second time in two tournaments this season, UConn captured third place, this time against a 20-team field, and Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) again finished in a tie for eighth as the Huskies competed in the Hartford Hawks Invitational at Bull's Bridge Golf Club in South Kent, Conn.
UConn recorded a 2-under 285-286-291=862 for the three-round tournament that ended Tuesday, just a single stroke behind second-place Seton Hall. UCF overwhelmed the rest of the field to win the team championship with a 28-under 836. Going back to last season, the result is UConn's 10th Top Five finish in its last 13 competitions.
Hervol improved with every round to finish with a 3-under 72-71-70=213 and capture the 10th Top 10 finish of his career, as well as hike his number of par-or-better rounds to 28. He was only six strokes behind individual medalist Juuso Kahlos of UCF (207), in the huge 116-player field.
Also for the Huskies, redshirt sophomore Drake Hull (Rutland, Vt.) recorded his first Top 20 finish since transferring to UConn from Kansas, firing an even-par 70-74-72=216 to tie for 20th place. Junior co-captain Nabeel Khan (Westerville, Ohio) tied for 31st place with a 3-over 76-71-72=219, which included his 14th and 15th rounds of par or better.
Three Huskies also competed in the event as individuals. Freshman Jack Boulger (Walpole, Mass.), competing in his first collegiate tournament, was part of a tie for 27th place with a 2-over 76-71-71=218, which included two rounds under par. Sophomore Tim Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.) shot a 5-over 71-73-78=222 to tie for 43rd place, while redshirt sophomore Zach Iannone (Hamden, Conn.) shot a 9-over 71-76-78=225 to tie for 57th place.
UConn continues its fall schedule on Oct. 1-3, when it journeys to Valentine, Neb., to compete in the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational, hosted by South Dakota State.
