Men's Golf In Seventh At Shelter Harbor Classic

Charlestown, R.I. (October 16, 2010)-Sophomore Brian Hughes shot a two-over par 73 Saturday and stands in a tie for fifth place overall individually, helping lead the University of Connecticut golf team to seventh place after the first day of action at the inaugural playing of The Classic at Shelter Harbor, hosted by the University of Rhode Island at Shelter Harbor G.C.

Columbia University (299) leads the team competition by one stroke over Harvard in the 16-team field, with Rhode Island and Hartford tied for third. UConn is eight shots off the pace at 307 after 18 holes.

Taylor Fontaine of URI leads the individual field after shooting a one-under 70, the only player in the field to break par. Hughes' score of 73 was three shots clear of any other Husky performer. Junior Adam Vaccari shot a 76, while junior Matt Carroll shot a 78.

The tournament concludes with 18 holes Sunday.
