Westerly, R.I. (October 17, 2010)-Sophomore Brian Hughes finished in a tie for 11th place and the University of Connecticut golf team finished in seventh place in the inaugural playing of The Classic at Shelter Harbor, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, which concluded Sunday at Shelter Harbor G.C.
Columbia University (588) captured the team title in the event, cruising to a nine shot victory over Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the US Naval Academy. UConn finished with a two-round total of 604, 16 shots back.
Matt Smith of the University of Hartford captured individual medalist honors by winning a playoff with James Pleat of Dartmouth. Hughes finished five shots out of the lead, while UConn junior Adam Vaccari finished in a tie for 19th place to also record a top-20 finish.

UConn returns to action Monday and Tuesday at the NEIGA Championship, held at the Captains GC in Brewster, Mass. The NEIGA event is the final tournament of the fall season for the Huskies.
