Buchanan Leads Golf to Third Place at the Match Play

Southern Pines, N.C. - University of Connecticut sophomore Jeb Buchanan won his match Sunday to lead the Huskies to a third place match victory over DePaul University at The Match Play at Pine Needles G.C.

Louisville defeated Notre Dame to capture the team title in the match play event, which featured 11 BIG EAST schools in action. The No. 4 seed Huskies defeated Georgetown in the second round and then lost to Notre Dame in the semifinals in action Saturday.

Buchanan defeated Greg Doherty by a score of 3 and 2 to lead the Husky effort Sunday in the third place match. Junior Matt Dubrowski beat Russell Budd, 4 and 2, to win his match, sophomore Adam Vaccari beat Michael Furci, 5 and 3, to win his contest and freshman Brian Hughes beat Charlie Harris, 2 up, to win his match-up. Sophomore Brian Hwang and junior Jeremy Troy each lost their matches, as UConn beat the Blue Demons by a count of 4-2.

The Match Play concludes UConn’s fall 2009 season, which featured a team championship at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Championship and an individual title by Jeb Buchanan at the Adams Cup. Those accomplishments marked the first team and individual titles for the Huskies under third-year head coach Dave Pezzino.
