HOUSTON, Texas (Feb. 16, 2009) – The University of Connecticut golf team concluded the first day of the Ninth Annual Rice Intercollegiate presented by Srixon and is in 14th place. The Huskies have a team score of 622 (315+307) following the first two rounds of competition, shaving eight strokes off their first round finish.
Kyle O’Connor (South Windsor, Conn.) led the Huskies in both rounds and finished the day with a 153. O’Connor is tied for 46th overall after shooting 78 and 75 in the first and second rounds, respectively.
Jeb Buchanan (Loudonville, N.Y.) and Bret Sierkierski (North Groxvenordale, Conn.) both finished the first day of competition with a 156. Each shot a 79 in the opening round and took two strokes off in the second to finish with a 77. They are tied for 61st overall.
Tied for 64th overall, L.J. Tosches (Grafton, Mass.) opened the day at Westwood Golf Club with a 79 and shot a 78 in the second round. Matt Carroll (Heathrow, Fla.) ended the day with a 165 (82+83) and is in 77th.
The University of Houston captured the lead after the second round with a team score of 575 to lead the field. The host school, Rice, is tied for fifth with a 590 after two rounds.
The Rice Intercollegiate will conclude with the final 18 holes on Tuesday at the Westwood Golf Club.
