Freshman Stephen Pastore tied for 46th place.
HILTON HEAD, S.C. (Feb. 19, 2013) --- University of Connecticut freshman golfers John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Stephen Pastore (Greenwich, Conn.) were the top two finishers for the Huskies at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, which ended Tuesday.
Flaherty (79-71-82-232) and Pastore (77-80-75-232) each finished at 16-over on the par 72 Wexford Plantation Golf Club course, good enough to be part of a tie for 46th place in the 90-player field.
As a team, UConn posted a 310-310-314-934 for the 54-hole event, finishing 16th in the 18-team field. It was the first tournament of the spring portion of UConn’s 2012-13 season.
Sophomore Chris Wiatr (Woodbury, Conn.) was the next UConn player on the leaderboard, shooting 77-78-79-234 to finish in a tie for 51st place. Freshman Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.) shot 77-81-78-236 to finish in a tie for 57th and junior Mike Masso (Suffield, Conn.) shot 80-85-86-251 to finish in 88th place.
Georgia Southern won the tournament, shooting an aggregate 15-over par 879 to defeat runner-up Francis Marion, the host school, by eight strokes. Richmond and South Florida tied for third place, each with a 24-over 888.
Individually, South Florida’s Trey Valentine (69-73-70-212) was the medalist, two strokes in front of Georgia Southern’s Scott Wolfes and J.T. Poston of Western Carolina.
UConn will return to South Carolina for its next tournament appearance, participating in the Charleston Shootout on March 4-5 at the Links at Stono Ferry in Charleston.
