GOODYEAR, Ariz. --- UConn junior Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.) shot a 4-over 220 (72-71-77) at the Palm Valley Golf Club to lead the UConn golf team to a ninth-place finish in the Loyola Golf Invitational sponsored by Neville Kovacs Group, the Huskies' first tournament of the spring season.
Zaback and UConn junior Cameron MacKay (Brookfield, Conn.), who played as an individual, were part of a tie for 17th in the 100-player field. MacKay shot 78-70-72-220 in the three-round event that ended Tuesday.
Also for the Huskies, senior Chris Wiatr (Woodbury, Conn.) shot 70-78-76-224 to tie for 36th place, sophomore Eric Dietrich (Cheshire, Conn.) shot 80-75-72-227 to tie for 51st place, senior Dane Rosa (Mansfield, Conn.) shot 73-78-77-228 to tie for 56th place, and junior John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.) shot 76-83-74-233 to finish in a tie for 70th place.
The individual medalist was Broc Johnson of Arizona State, who shot a 9-under 69-70-68-207.
UConn's aggregate 291-302-299-892 was ninth in the large 17-team field. The team championship went to Utah Valley (280-289-299-868).
The Huskies will continue their spring schedule on March 9 when they travel to Bluffton, S.C., to compete in the Colleton River Collegiate tournament at Colleton River Plantation.
