GOODYEAR, Ariz. --- The UConn men's golf team traveled to Arizona to open the spring portion of its 2017-18 season and captured a ninth-place finish at the Loyola Intercollegiate, held at the Palm Valley Golf Club.
Junior Nick Harrington (Chaplin, Conn.) recorded the lowest score of his college career to lead the Huskies' effort. For the first time, Harrington put together three consecutive rounds under par to produce a 7-under 68-70-71=209, good enough to tie for 18th place in the 107-player field. The result upped Harrington's total to nine rounds of par or better this year and it is his third Top 20 finish this year.
Junior co-captain Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) shot two sub-70 rounds on his way to a 6-under 67-69-74=210, and a tie for 22nd place. Hervol now has 16 sub-70 rounds in his college career and 34 rounds of par or better.
Also competing for UConn, redshirt sophomore Drake Hull (Rutland, Vt.) shot a 1-under 74-71-70=215 and junior Nabeel Khan (Westerville, Ohio) shot a 1-under 70-69-76=215, to each be part of a tie for 41st place. Freshman Rodrigo Sanchez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) tied for 63rd place with a 3-over 71-73-75=219.
Three Huskies also competed in the tourney as individuals. Redshirt sophomore Zach Iannone (Hamden, Conn.) tied for 79th place his a 6-over 76-76-70=222, freshman Jack Boulger (Walpole, Mass.) tied for 83rd with an 8-over 77-74-73=224, and freshman Finn Boynton (Milford, Conn.) tied for 97th place with a 12-over 78-77-73=228.
As a team, the Huskies finished ninth in the 19-team field, with a 19-under 276-279-290=845.College of Charleston won the event with a 48-under 816.
The Huskies will not have to wait long to return to competition, heading for Florida on March 5-6 to play in the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate at Fort Lauderdale Country Club.
