GOODYEAR, Ariz. --- UConn men’s golf senior co-captain Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.) began the spring portion of the Huskies’ schedule with the best round of his college career. Zaback shot a sizzling 7-under par 65 Sunday to take the individual lead after the first round of the Loyola Intercollegiate, held at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz.
Playing in the 41st event and the 115th round of his college career, Zaback produced his 12th sub-70 round and his 34th round of par or better. He leads the 104-player field by one stroke over a four-way tie for second.
Zaback was joined by three UConn teammates with rounds of par or better in an outstanding performance that lifted the Huskies into third place in the 18-team field. Junior Eric Dietrich (Cheshire, Conn.) fired a 3-under 69 to tie for 14th place, senior Cameron MacKay (Brookfield, Conn.) had a 1-under 71 to tie for 31st place, and senior John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.) shot an even-par 72 to tie for 38th place. Freshman Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) had a 4-over 76 to tie for 82nd place.
Playing as individuals, UConn senior Corey Birch (Ridgefield, Conn.) shot an even-par 72 to join Flaherty in a the tie for 38th and sophomore Sasha Wortelboer (Geneva, Switzerland) had a 2-over 74 to tie for 63rd place.
UConn’s aggregate 11-under 277 was third behind Indiana’s 17-under 271 and William & Mary’s 13-under 275 in the 18-team field.
The tournament continues with single rounds on Monday and Tuesday.
