FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. --- The UConn golf team placed all five of its players among the top 40 on the leaderboard to capture a seventh-place finish at the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate, which played its final round Tuesday at the Fort Lauderdale Country Club.
The Huskies, playing the second tournament of the spring portion of their schedule, recorded an 18-over 292-292-298=882, to finish seventh among the 14-team field, just five strokes short of a Top Five finish. Austin Peay State won the event with a 1-under 863 performance.
Junior co-captain Nabeel Khan (Westerville, Ohio) led the UConn contingent, managing a 4-over 72-72-76=220 to finish in a tie for 21st place in the 90-player field. It upped Khan's career total of par or better rounds to 23.
UConn freshman Rodrigo Sanchez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) finished in a tie for 25th with a 5-over 73-74-74=221, while junior co-captain Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) was in a tie for 30th with a 6-over 72-75-75=222. Also for the Huskies, redshirt sophomore Drake Hull (Rutland, Vt.) notched a tie for 36th place with a 7-over 76-74-73=223 and junior Nick Harrington (Chaplin, Conn.) shot an 8-over 75-72-77=224 to finish in a tie for 39th place.
Playing as an individual, UConn redshirt sophomore Zach Iannone (Hamden, Conn.) finished in a tie for 62nd place with a 12-over 76-76-76=228. Cole Castro of Florida Gulf Coast was the individual winner with a 6-under 210.
The Huskies will be back on the road next week, heading for the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif., on March 12-13 to compete for the first time in the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic.
