Parajeckas shoots 67 to lead Golf in Spring Opener

    FORT PIERCE, Fla. (March 7, 2007)-- Senior Jason Parajeckas (Woburn, Mass.). shot a four-under par 67 Wednesday to lead the University of Connecticut golf team as it opened the 2007 spring season in competition at the Treasure Coast Classic at the Indian Hills Golf Club.

    Parajeckas stood in a tie for sixth place in the individual competition and the Huskies were tied for seventh in the team standings. George Zolotas of St. John's shot a course record 61 Wednesday to hold the individual lead and help the Red Storm to a 15-under 269 team total and the first place spot.

    The UConn squad shot an even par total of 284 on the day ,with the top four team finishers counting toward the team total. Sophomore Bret Siekierski (North Grosvenordale, Conn.) and junior Brian Travalja (Oradell, N.J.) each shot 72 on the afternoon, while sophomore L.J. Tosches (Grafton, Mass.) totaled 73 and Bret Siekierski (North Grosvenordale, Conn.) carded a 74 for his round.

    UConn also had five players compete as individuals in the tournament, with their scores not counting toward the team total. Senior Dan White (Westford, Mass.) and freshman Derek Newman (Palatine, Ill.) each shot 72 on the round. Freshman Ben Estabrook (Bangor, Maine) shot a 75, while junior Ryan Dandeneau (Chepachet, R.I.) carded a 77 and sophomore Tim Strout (Nashua, N.H.) totaled 78.

    The tournament, hosted by fellow BIG EAST member St. John's University, continues Thursday and Friday.
