DADE CITY, Fla. (March 8, 2009)-- Freshman Jeb Buchanan shot a team-low three-over par 75 Sunday to the lead the University of Connecticut men's golf team as it completed play at the Ron Smith/USF Invitational at Lake Jovita CC, hosted by the University of South Florida.
Santiago Rivas of Texas Tech shot a closing round 68 Sunday to help his school tie for the team title with Florida Southern College. Rivas also tied for individual medalist honors with Matt Stauch of Florida Southern College. Middle Tennessee State finished in third place in the team competition, while Mike Van Sickle of Marquette finished in third in the individual race, three shots behind Rivas and Stauch.
Buchanan's 75 placed him at 229 and in a tie for 93rd place for the three day competition, one shot ahead of fellow Husky freshman Brian Hwang, who finished with a 79 Sunday to finish at 230, tied for 99th. The Huskies finished 22nd of 23 teams in the competition.
UConn returns to action on Saturday-Sunday, March 21-22 when it competes in the Linger Longer Invitational at Reynolds Landing in Greensboro, Ga.
