Zach Zaback shot a 2-under par 70 on Sunday.
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. (March 17, 2013) --- Freshman Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.) shot a 2-under par 70 on Sunday, helping the University of Connecticut men's golf team tie for 12th at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular, played on the Las Colinas Golf Course at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
Zaback's 2-under round, the only sub-par round of the tournament for the Huskies, gave him a three-round total of 8-over 224 (75-79-70-224), good enough to tie for 27th place individually in the large 116-player field.
UConn sophomore Chris Wiatr (Woodbury, Conn.) followed Zaback on the Huskies with a 75-74-78-227, which left him in a tie for 41st place in the tourney. The remainder of the UConn lineup included freshman Stephen Pastore (Greenwich, Conn.), who tied for 85th with a 78-84-77-239, freshman John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn), who tied for 97th with a 79-82-81-242, and junior Mike Masso (Suffield, Conn.), who shot 83-81-81-245 to tie for 105th place.
Two other Huskies competed in the tournament as individual players: freshman Corey Birch (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished in a tie for 80th with a 81-79-78-238, while sophomore Dane Rosa (Mansfield, Conn.) shot 79-79-82-240 to finish in a tie for 88th place.
As a team, the Huskies shot an aggregate 307-316-306-929 to tie Morehead State for 12th in the 18-team field, just 12 shots away from a top 10 finish. Indiana won the tourney with a 292-286-291-869. The top individual player was Jonathan Grey of Georgia State, who shot an 8-under 70-71-67-208, to win by five strokes over Indiana's Brant Peaper (72-72-69-213).
UConn will continue the spring portion of its 2012-13 schedule on March 29-31, when the Huskies travel to The Fountains Country Club in Lake Worth, Fla., to compete in the Florida Atlantic University Spring Break Championship.
