STORRS, Conn. - The 27th Annual Joe Giannelli UConn Golf Classic and Golf Team Reunion is set for Friday, May 9, 2014, at the beautiful Shelter Harbor Golf Club in Westerly R.I.
The event, named in honor of the late Joe Giannelli, longtime golf coach at UConn, is the primary fundraiser for the men's golf team at UConn. It is the main reason that the Huskies are able to play a national tournament schedule on some to the country's finest courses against some of the strongest competition in Division I collegiate golf.
Shelter Harbor opened for play in 2004 and has been rated by Golfweek Magazine as one of the top 25 new courses in the country. It not only offers generous fairways and tour-quality greens, but former UConn golf captain (1989) Dave Tiedermann is Shelter Harbor's head golf professional.
The Giannelli Golf Classic offers a full day of activities, beginning with a luncheon at 11 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. and a social hour at 5 p.m.
Golfers can register their foursomes at $450 per participant, a substantial portion of which is tax deductible, or take advantage of a number of sponsorship opportunities, ranging from Title Sponsor to Hole Sponsor.
Giannelli was a 37-year member of the UConn Athletics staff, coaching football, golf, and lacrosse during his tenure as well as serving as a game operations administrator. He became the head golf coach in 1981 and held the position for 20 years, until the summer of 2000, leading the Huskies to the BIG EAST championship in 1994 and the ECAC Championship in 1993. He guided UConn to top 10 finishes in 97 of the 124 tournaments he coached. Under Giannelli, UConn won the New England Championship in the fall of 1982, the spring of 1993, the fall of 1994, and the spring of 1997. After 2000, he continued to serve as coach emeritus for the UConn golf team until his death.
The registration deadline is April 18, 2014, with checks made payable to The UConn Foundation.
