STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The UConn men's golf team shot the second-best aggregate round of the day Sunday to climb up the leaderboard for a third-place finish at the Rutherford Collegiate tournament at the Penn State Blue Course.
Led by sophomore Zach Zaback's (Farmington, Conn.) 2-under par 69, the Huskies posted an aggregate 290 in the third and final round, second only to Seton Hall's aggregate 284. Overall, UConn's 292-294-290-876 tied with Rutgers (289-284-303-876) for third place in the 14-team field. Minnesota (286-278-296-860) and Seton Hall (295-293-284-872) finished 1-2 in the event.
Zaback's 69, which was part of a three-way tie for low round of the day, was one of only five sub-par rounds shot during Sunday's third round. For the three rounds, Zaback shot 74-70-69 for an even-par 213, good enough to finish fourth in the 78-player field. Minnesota's Jose Mendez (68-65-74-207) was the overall individual medalist.
Also for the Huskies, sophomore Corey Birch (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished in a tie for 11th place with a 71-73-74-218, while sophomore John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.) tied for 16th with a 73-74-72-219.
The Rutherford Intercollegiate event was the final tournament of UConn's regular season. The Huskies will next compete against the other conference teams at The American Championship at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club, near Tampa, Fla.
