STATE COLLEGE, Pa. --- Freshman John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.) earned his third consecutive top 20 finish to lead the UConn men's golf team to sixth place at the Rutherford Intercollegiate Tournament, which ended Sunday at the Penn State Blue Course.
Flaherty shot a 77-72-76-225 to finish in a tie for 17th place in the 75-player field. It is Flaherty's fourth top 20 finish of the year and his third straight. He was closely followed by freshman teammate Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.) , who shot 77-76-73-226, which earned him a tie for 22nd place. It was Zaback's fifth top 25 finish of the season.
UConn sophomore Dane Rosa (Mansfield, Conn.) shot one of only nine rounds of even-par or better during the three-day tournament when he shot an even-par 71 during the first round. For the tournament, Rosa shot 71-79-79-229 to finish in 33rd place. Junior captain Michael Masso (Suffield, Conn.) shot 80-82-77-239 to earn a tie for 61st place. Following an unfortunate first-round disqualification due to a misplayed ball, sophomore Chris Wiatr (Woodbury, Conn.) shot an outstanding 72-70-142.
Xavier's Tanapol Vattanapisit (73-73-70-216) captured individual medalist honors, winning a playoff against Penn State's JD Dornes (73-69-74-216).
As a team, the Huskies shot an aggregate 305-299-296-900 on the 7,202-yard course, finishing sixth, just 10 strokes behind tourney winner Binghamton University (302-301-287-890). The Huskies were five strokes behind Xavier, four strokes behind Minnesota and Penn State, and just three strokes in back on fifth-place Maryland. The field included 14 teams.
The Rutherford Intercollegiate Tournament is the final regular-season tournament on the UConn schedule. The Huskies will compete in the BIG EAST Conference Men's Golf Championship on April 28-30 on The Watson Course at Reunion Resort in Reunion, Fla.
