STORRS, Conn. - With a veteran team that features four seniors and four juniors, the UConn men’s golf team will face a challenging schedule in 2014-15, consisting of 10 tournaments before The American Conference Championships.
The Huskies will play in five events in the fall portion of their schedule and five events in the spring before conference play. UConn will host a tournament in each half of its schedule --- the Connecticut Cup at Ellington Ridge Country Club in October and the Northeast Invitational at Mohegan Sun Golf Club in April.
“I think it's an extremely strong schedule,” said coach Dave Pezzino, entering his eighth season at UConn. “It goes along with what we’ve worked toward, continuing our tradition of trying to play the best competition we can at some of the finest courses in the country. We want to play the kind of schedule that will best prepare us for the conference tournament and the (NCAA) regionals.”
UConn will open the season on Sept. 12-14, traveling to Illinois to play for the first time in the Olympia Fields/ Fighting Illini Invitational. Olympia Fields, former site of the U.S. Open, is rated as one of the top 50 courses in the country and the event annually attracts some of the nation’s top teams.
On Sept. 22-23, the Huskies will stay close to home and again compete in the Hartford Hawks Invitational at Bull’s Bridge Country Club in South Kent, Conn. The following week, UConn will be in Quechee, Vt., to play in the Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge, hosted by Dartmouth.
“Hartford always runs a first-class tournament and we enjoy the Bull’s Bridge course,” Pezzino said. “The Quechee Club Challenge is a new tournament for us, and any time you get to play golf in the fall in Vermont, it’s always a great experience.”
UConn will host the sixth annual Connecticut Cup on Oct. 13-14 at Ellington Ridge, with 15 teams expected to compete. The Huskies are the defending champion of the tourney and UConn rising junior Zach Zaback is the two-time defending individual medalist.
“We have a great relationship with the folks at Ellington Ridge,” Pezzino said. “We’ve built an exciting annual event with a great field and I’m expecting another extremely competitive tournament.”
UConn will wrap up the fall portion of the schedule on Oct. 27-28, at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate, held at the Quail Valley Golf Club in Vero Beach, Fla. The event is hosted by McNeese State.
The spring portion of the schedule begins on Feb. 22-24, as the Huskies return to the Snowman Getaway, hosted by Loyola-Maryland, at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz.
“It’s a great way to start the spring for our players,” Pezzino said. “It’s 18 holes per day at Palm Valley, which is just a wonderful course.”
UConn will continue its schedule with two tournaments in March --- the Colleton River Collegiate, hosted by Michigan State, on March 9-10 on the Dye Course at Colleton River Plantation in Bluffton, S.C., and the FAU Slomin Autism Championship on March 27-29, hosted by Florida Atlantic, at The Fountains Golf Club in Lake Worth, Fla.
On April 11-12, the Huskies will again host the Northeast Invitational at the Mohegan Sun Golf Club in Baltic, Conn., and UConn will wrap up its regular season at the Yale Spring Invitational on April 18-19 at The Golf Course at Yale in New Haven.
“The Yale tournament will have a very strong field,” Pezzino said. “It will be a great test for us before we head into the conference championships.”
The American Championships are set for April 26-28 at The Quarry Course at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Fla. NCAA postseason play follows.
The Huskies’ roster will be headed by senior co-captains Mike Masso (Suffield, Conn.) and Chris Wiatr (Woodbury, Conn.). The remainder of the squad includes seniors Dan Myers (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Dane Rosa (Mansfield, Conn.), juniors Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.), John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.), Corey Birch (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Cameron MacKay (Brookfield, Conn.), sophomore Eric Dietrich (Cheshire, Conn.), and freshman Sasha Wortelboer (Geneva, Switzerland).
