STORRS, Conn. --- UConn rising juniors Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Nabeel Khan (Westerville, Ohio) have been named co-captains of the 2017-18 men’s golf team, head coach Dave Pezzino has announced.
Hervol and Khan are the top two returning scorers from last year’s team, one of the most successful in the program’s history, with three tournament victories and eight Top 5 finishes in 11 events. Both played in all 11 tournaments on the UConn schedule, Hervol leading the team with a 72.1 strokes per round average for 31 rounds and Khan averaging 73.2 strokes for his 31 rounds.
In a vote of the UConn team members at season’s end, Hervol was named the Huskies’ Player of the Year, while Khan given the Player Development Award as the most improved player.
Hervol, an All-American Athletic Conference selection, won the season-opening Doc Gimmler Invitational, one of his seven Top 10 finishes in 2016-17. He had 16 rounds of par or better and seven sub-70 rounds. Hervol was named the AAC Golfer of the Month for September and to the Division I PING All-Northeast Region Team. He has twice been named to the AAC All-Academic Team.
Khan, who also was named to the 2016-17 AAC All-Academic Team, had three Top10 and four Top 20 finishes for the Huskies last season, including two in the Top 5. He shot par or better in 12 rounds, including five sub-70 rounds. Following the end of the spring semester, Khan won the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
