HARTFORD, Conn. --- The UConn men's golf program was well-represented at the 87th New England Amateur Championship, which ended Thursday at the par-70 Hartford Golf Club. Of the 45 competitors who made the cut for the final two rounds of the four-round event, no fewer than eight had ties to UConn.
Leading the Huskies' contingent was Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.), last year's senior co-captain, whose final-round 4-under par 66 lifted him to a 2-under 278 (72-72-69-66=278) for the tournament and placed him in a five-way tie for second place behind tourney champion James Turner (273) of Gloucester, Mass. Zaback, a Division I All-New England and PING All-Region selection after his senior season, has won the Connecticut State Amateur Championship and the Russell Palmer Cup title in the past few weeks.
John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.), UConn's other senior co-captain this past year, finished the New England Amateur in a tie for 14th place with a 75-66-71-70=282.
UConn's past and UConn's future came together in a tie for 20th place. Incoming UConn freshman Tim Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.), who led the tournament after two rounds with an impressive 5-under 135, completed the top 20 finish with a 68-67-75-74=284, while former (1994-98) Husky Brian Ahern (West Hartford, Conn.) also finished 20th with a 72-69-69-74=284.
UConn rising senior Eric Dietrich (Cheshire, Conn.), who will compete in the U.S. Amateur Championship next month, and recently-graduated Corey Birch (Ridgefield, Conn.) were part of a deadlock for 25th place. Dietrich fired a 75-69-71-70=285 and Birch came in with a 71-71-70-73=285.
UConn rising sophomore Nick Harrington (Chaplin, Conn.) finished in a tie for 30th place with a 71-71-70-75=287, and rising sophomore Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) was in a tie for 35th with a 74-68-74-74=290.
