WINCHESTER, Mass. - The University of Connecticut golf team was well-represented this week at the 85th New England Amateur Championship with four Huskies finishing in the top 39, including two Top-10 finishes, after Thursday's final round.
The New England Amateur, which was played at the Winchester Country Club, was a four-round tournament from July 22-24 featuring some of the best talent the northeast has to offer.
Rising junior Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.) led all Huskies by taking home third place after shooting 1-under in the final round, matching his score from Rounds 2 and 3, to improve his overall tournament score to 2-under. After winning the 112th Connecticut State Amateur Championship on June 20, Zaback posted scores of 72-70-70-70 this week to continue his summer success.
Since capturing the State Amateur title, Zaback has also qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship, finishing second at the Black Hall Club in Old Lyme on July 14. The U.S. Amateur will be played from August 11-17 at the Highlands Course in John Creeks, Ga.
UConn rising senior co-captain Chris Wiatr (Woodbury, Conn.) finished in a tie for ninth in the New England Amateur after shooting even par in the final round, maintaining his 1-over total for the tournament. Wiatr shot a 2-under, 69 in the first round, which was followed by 72-73 before Thursday's 71.
The Husky captain's best finish of the summer came at the Providence Open on July 10-11, where he finished as the low amateur (fourth place overall).
Not far behind Zaback and Wiatr in the New England Amateur was rising junior John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.), who tied for 14th with a 3-over for the tournament. Flaherty shot even par on Thursday, tying him with one other golfer and earning a score line of 73-71-72-71.
The junior has had an eventful summer, finishing as the runner-up in the Russell C. Palmer Cup at the Country Club of Waterbury on May 21 and as a semi-finalist at the State Amateur at the Lake of Isles on June 20. Flaherty also competed in the U.S. Amateur Qualifying at Black Hall with Zaback, earning second alternate honors for the Amateur Championship.
Junior Corey Birch (Ridgefield, Conn.) rounded out the Husky top finishers in the New England Amateur after coming in 39th place overall. Birch's first round 70 put him in position to make the cut after the second round, making him the fourth Husky golf team member to finish in the top 40.
Birch has participated in the Palmer Cup, State Amateur, and U.S. Amateur qualifier this summer, staying active as he prepares for the challenging 2014-15 UConn schedule.
Zaback, Wiatr, and Flaherty will be competing in the 80th Connecticut Open Championship on Monday, which will be played at the Rolling Hills Country Club in Wilton, Conn., from July 28-30.
