STORRS, Conn. -
University of Connecticut men's golf coach Dave Pezzino has announced that Eric Dietrich (Cheshire, Conn.) will join the program as a freshman for the 2013-14 academic year.
Dietrich, a two-time golf team captain at Cheshire High School, is a two-time All-State and two-time All-Southern Connecticut Conference performer. He won the 2012 U.S. Challenge Cup Junior Round Up as well as the 2012 U.S. Challenge Cup Francis Ouimet Junior Stroke Play Championship.
"Eric will be a great addition to our program," said Pezzino, starting his seventh year as UConn head coach. "Several of his family members are already UConn graduates, so he's grown up with a rich UConn tradition."
Dietrich, 18, who plays out of the Farms Country Club in Wallingford, was chosen the Scholar-Athlete at Cheshire High in his junior year and was a New Haven Register first-team pick in his junior and senior year. In addition, he played four years of basketball at Cheshire, breaking the school record for most three-pointers in a season. On the hardcourt, he was an All-Housatonic Division, All-SCC, and honorable mention All-State selection as a senior.
Dietrich will be the lone freshman on the 10-man Husky roster, which will include senior Mike Masso, juniors Chris Wiatr, Dane Rosa, and Dan Myers, and sophomores Zach Zaback, John Flaherty, Stephen Pastore, Corey Birch, and Cameron MacKay.
"Eric is an extremely hard worker, so he will fit in nicely with our returning guys," Pezzino said. "His work ethic matches the culture that is in place here in Storrs. Eric had a wonderful junior career and I look forward to him continuing to grow as a student-athlete at UConn."
The UConn golf team will kick off its five-tournament fall schedule on Sept. 1-2, traveling to Verona, N.Y., to compete in the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate Tournament.
The schedule will continue with the Adams Cup of Newport (Newport, R.I.) on Sept. 16-17, the Hartford Hawks Invitational (South Kent, Conn.) on Sept. 16-17, and the MacDonald Cup (New Haven, Conn.) on Oct. 5-6.
UConn will then host The Connecticut Cup on Oct. 14-15 at Ellington Ridge Country Club in Ellington, Conn., to finish the fall schedule.
