Middletown, R.I. - UConn sophomore John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.) shot a 73 Tuesday, his best round of the tournament, to lead the Huskies to a ninth-place finish at the Adams Cup of Newport.
Flaherty's 1-over 73 at Newport National Golf Club gave him a 76-76-73-225 for the three-round event, good enough for a tie for 14th place in the 90-player field. Flaherty had 11 birdies to finish in a tie for seventh in that category.
Flaherty finished one stroke in front of junior teammate Chris Wiatr (Woodbury, Conn.), who had 73-69-84-226, and finished in a tie for 20th place. Wiatr, however, led the tournament in scoring on the Par 3 holes, shooting even par, and also recorded one of just 13 eagles.
