Middletown, R.I. - UConn sophomore John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.) shot a 73 Tuesday, his best round of the tournament, to lead the Huskies to a ninth-place finish at the Adams Cup of Newport.

Flaherty's 1-over 73 at Newport National Golf Club gave him a 76-76-73-225 for the three-round event, good enough for a tie for 14th place in the 90-player field. Flaherty had 11 birdies to finish in a tie for seventh in that category.

Flaherty finished one stroke in front of junior teammate Chris Wiatr (Woodbury, Conn.), who had 73-69-84-226, and finished in a tie for 20th place. Wiatr, however, led the tournament in scoring on the Par 3 holes, shooting even par, and also recorded one of just 13 eagles.

UConn sophomore Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.) finished in a tie for 41st place with a 76-76-82-234, while freshman Eric Dietrich (Cheshire, Conn.), who also had an eagle, finished in a tie for 51st place with 82-74-81-237, and sophomore Corey Birch (Ridgefield, Conn.) shot 87-79-84-250 to finish in 86th place.

Playing as an individual, UConn junior Dane Rosa (Mansfield, Conn.) finished in a tie for 34th place with 80-74-78-232.

Individual medalist honors went to Ryan Fricker of Bethune-Cookman, who shot 67-66-72-205, 11-under par.

As a team, UConn shot 307-295-320-922, to finish ninth in the 16-team field. UCF was the easy winner of the Adams Cup, firing 273-292-291-856 to beat second place Bethune-Cookman by 16 strokes. Rhode Island (904) finished third, Hartford (910) and Johnson & Wales (910) tied for fourth, Bryant (914) was sixth, Rollins (918) finished seventh, and Temple (920) was eighth.

UConn will continue the fall portion of its 2013-14 schedule on Sept. 23-24 at the Hartford Hawks Invitational at the Bull's Bridge Golf Club in South Kent, Conn.
