Golf Opens Fall at Adams Cup of Newport

STORRS, Conn. (September 22, 2008)-- The University of Connecticut men's golf team will open the 2008 Fall season in competition at the 15th Annual Adams Cup of Newport/Cleveland Golf Classic at Newport National Golf Club on Monday-Tuesday, September 22-23.

The tourney is hosted by the University of Rhode Island and the field includes 16 teams from 13 different conferences.

UConn, under second-year head coach Dave Pezzino, enters the tournament with five returnees from last season and five newcomers to the squad.

"This is a young group with a nice collection of tournament experience," said Pezzino. "Our tournament schedule will again be challenging, but we are a much deeper squad this year with the possibility of having several different players competing to play each week. Qualifying for tournament play should be extremely competitive for each spot."

Five Huskies will see action at the Adams Cup. They are: junior (South Windsor, Conn.), senior (Grafton, Mass.), sophomore (Norwich, Conn.), sophomore (Bergenfield, N.J.) and freshman (Winsted, Conn.). Those players earn their spot through qualifying over the past several weeks.

"The five guys who have qualified for the trip have played 12 rounds of qualifying to represent UConn at the Adams Cup," said Pezzino. "The field is strong and the course is an American classic. This group is definitely ready to compete and excited to represent UConn. This will be a great way to start the 2008-2009 year."

Pezzino continued with a breakdown of UConn's five-man squad for the competition: "Kyle O'Connor has taken a huge step forward in his development as a player. He has given himself many more options to post some low scores. Kyle has trained hard and is ready to compete this year. L.J. Tosches is ready to make his senior year at UConn his most competitive and productive. He continues to impress with me his mental approach. He is having fun and taking his game to another level. Chris DeLucia used this summer to become stronger and add different shots to his game. I am excited to watch his development this year. His short game will again be a nice addition to his solid ball striking. Matt Dubrowski has something you can't coach; he has a great attitude and he has improved his ball striking this summer. I look forward to Matt's sophomore campaign. Adam Vaccari is just a freshman, but he has a great attitude that will take him far. Adam's length and short game will be a great asset to the maturity, experience and depth of our team.

Over the past 14 years, the Adams Cup of Newport has developed into one of the finest golf tournaments on the East Coast, annually attracting some of the top NCAA golf programs in the country. This year, the field is comprised of 16 teams from 11 different states and the District of Columbia.

"The Adams Cup gives the best college teams in the country an opportunity to compete at a spectacular facility and experience Rhode Island hospitality." said URI golf coach Tom Drennan. "We have put together another very competitive field made up of teams from around the country."

The Orchard Course at Newport National Golf Club - from the championship tees - is a par-72, 7,244-yard course designed by legendary course architect Arthur Hills.

Full results from the 2008 Adams Cup will be available on after the completion of play on each day of competition.
