SOUTH KENT, Conn. --- Led by junior Eric Dietrich (Cheshire, Conn.), four members of the UConn golf team placed among the top 15 on the leaderboard Monday at Bull’s Bridge Golf Club, giving the Huskies the lead after the first two rounds of the Hartford Hawk Invitational.
UConn’s 279-286=565 (-11) was good enough for a four-stroke lead over second-place UCF in the 20-team field. Seton Hall (282-292=574) sits in third place heading into the final round.
Dietrich fired a 67-69 for an 8-under total of 136 Monday, tied for second place just one stroke behind UCF’s Donnie Trosper. Jonathan Chang of Rutgers also had a 136 on Monday.
Playing in its first tournament of the 2015-16 season, the Huskies also placed senior co-captains John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.) in a tie for ninth and a tie for 12th respectively, with a 2-under 71-71=142 and a 1-under 69-74=143.
In his first college competition, UConn freshman Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) shot an even-par 72-72=144 to tie for 15th place. Senior Cameron MacKay (Brookfield, Conn.) was in a tie for 57th in the 108-team field after shooting a 79-74=153.
The final round of the tourney is set for Tuesday.
