NEW HAVEN - Senior Eric Dietrich (Cheshire, Conn.) and sophomore Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) each recorded a Top 10 finish to led the UConn men's golf team to a sixth-place finish in the 17-team Macdonald Cup tournament, held at The Course at Yale.
Dietrich's 3-under par round of 67 during the final round on Sunday gave him a 3-over 72-74-67=213 for the tournament, the 28th round of par or better in his college career. It is the eighth Top 10 finish for the Huskies' co-captain.
Hervol, the Huskies' scoring leader (70.3) through four events this season, shot 3-over 69-70-74=213 to earn his place as part of the six-way tie for 10th place in the 88-player field. For Hervol, who already has a tournament win this year, it was the fourth Top 10 finish of his career and upped his total of par-or-better rounds to 15. Boston College's Matt Naumec won individual medalist honors with a 10-under par 200.
The duo led UConn to an aggregate 14-over 281-888-285=854 and sixth place. Harvard (even-par 840) won the event, followed by Stirling University (842), and Yale (847).
Also for the Huskies, sophomore Nabeel Khan (Westerville, Ohio) finished in a tie for 27th place by shooting a 6-over 64-76-76=216, which included the lowest round of his career.
A pair of UConn freshmen, Chandler Morris (Hobe Sound, Fla.) and Tim Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.), were part of a tie for 44th place. Morris shot a 10-over 76-74-70=220, while Umphrey shot a 10-over 76-70-74=220.
UConn will wrap up the fall portion of its 2016-17 season on Oct. 10-11, when it hosts the eighth annual Connecticut Cup. The 15-team event will be held at Ellington Ridge Country Club in Ellington, Conn.
