BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. --- Playing in the first-ever Mountaineer Intercollegiate tournament, the UConn men's golf team captured second place at the Pete Dye Golf Club, UConn's third Top 5 finish in four events this season,
The Huskies shot an aggregate 295-300=595 in the 36-hole tournament hosted by West Virginia University, second only to Penn State's 585 among the 14-team field. Mississippi State finished third, one stroke behind UConn as the tournament was completed on Tuesday.
Seniors John Flaherty (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Cameron MacKay (Brookfield, Conn.) led UConn's charge to second place. Flaherty shot a 2-over 71-75=146, good enough for seventh place. It was Flaherty's best finish of the season and included his 14th career round of par or better. MacKay's 3-over 74-73=147 tied for eighth place, MacKay's first top 10 finish of the season, his best tournament performance and the best finish of his four-year career.
UConn freshman Jimmy Hervol (Hopkinton, Mass.) finished with a 6-over 71-79=150, including his fifth round of par or better, to tie for 19th place. Hervol has two top 20 finishes this season.
UConn junior Eric Dietrich (Cheshire, Conn.) finished in a tie for 55th place in the 79-player field after shooting a 12-over, 83-73=156, while senior Zach Zaback (Farmington, Conn.) shot a 14-over, 79-79=158 to tie for 60th place.
UConn sophomore Sasha Wortelboer (Geneva, Switzerland), playing as an individual, matched Zaback's 79-79=158, to become part of the tie for 60th place. The individual medalist was Cincinnati's Davis Baxter, who carded a 5-under 70-69=139.
The Huskies will wrap up the fall portion of their 2015-16 season on Oct. 26-27, when they travel to Vero Beach, Fla., to compete in the Quail Valley Intercollegiate Tournament, hosted by McNeese State, at the Quail Valley Golf Club.
