    Huskies take fourth place at NEIGA Championship

    BREWSTER, MA (October 23) – The University of Connecticut men’s golf team finished fourth at the NEIGA Championship after shooting a 305 (+17) in the final round of play on Tuesday for an overall score of 604 (+28). The Huskies, who were tied for third after yesterday’s first round, finished ahead of 42 other teams but behind Central Connecticut (599), Hartford (591) and tournament champion Rhode Island (584).

    Hartford golfer Dean Carrigan was the tournament medalist. Both Carrigan and yesterday’s leader–Rhode Island’s Mike Carbone–finished at 140 (-4) for the tournament, but Carrigan won the title in a playoff.

    Connecticut senior Sean Vigue (Lebanon, CT) carded the best UConn score of the day with a 75 (+3), giving him a 148 (+4) for the tournament and tying him with two others for ninth place. Seniors Kevin Coghlan (North Ridge, CA) and Kevin O’Connor (East Lyme, CT) each shot 76 (+4) in the final round, and Coghlan finished tied for 19th with a 152 (+8) while O’Connor finished a stroke behind at 153 (+9) and tied for 24th.

    Freshmen Jeff Stebbins (Ramsey, NJ) and Mike Murphy (Woburn, MA) finished tied for 39th and 44th, respectively. Stebbins fired back-to-back rounds of 78 each day for a combined 156 (+12), while Murphy followed his lowest score of the season (a 73 on Monday) with an 84 for a combined 157 (+13).

    The Huskies will finish the fall season with a trip to Leesburg, VA for the Georgetown Invitational on October 28 and 29.
