STORRS, Conn. -
UConn men’s golf coach Dave Pezzino has announced that Sasha Wortelboer, an outstanding young player from Geneva, Switzerland, has signed a Letter of Intent to attend UConn beginning in the 2014-15 academic year.
Wortelboer, 18, graduated from Ecole Inetrnational de Geneve last June and is currently a student in the post-graduate program at the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy in Howey In Hills, Fla.
“It’s a big achievement for me,” the 6-4, 180-pound Wortelboer said as he signed his letter. “I’m reaching the next phase of my career and I’m really excited about that. The coaches there ( UConn) are amazing and the team was great toward me.”
Wortelboer will continue to attend the Gilchrist Academy in the spring, 2014 semester before enrolling at UConn in the fall.
“I’m extremely excited to add a player with international experience,” Pezzino said. “Sasha is a focused young man with a strong international resume. He brings a lot of maturity with him, as well as a competitive spirit and positive attitude that will fit in well with our current players. I expect Sasha to be a great asset to add to our already hard-working group of young men.”
Wortelboer had made a name for himself as a rising player throughout the junior competitions throughout Europe and had an outstanding summer in 2013, including winning the championship against a field of 100 at the Challenge Cup World Series of Junior Golf at Triggs Memorial Country Club in Providence, a second place of 59 golfers at the Francis Ouimet Junior Championship in Massachusetts, and leading a Swiss team to the Interclub Men’s Division A1 title at Niederburen Golf Club in his home country.
Wortelboer will be joining a veteran UConn team which will return its entire roster next season. The Huskies currently have one redshirt junior, three juniors, four sophomores, and one freshman on the roster.
