STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's hockey team finished the weekend series against AIC with a 1-1 tie in West Springfield, Mass., to take three points on the weekend, following a 3-1 victory on Friday night. Cody Sharib scored midway through the third period to send the game into overtime and earn the point in the AHA standings.
UConn sees its record go to 10-11-3 (7-8-2 AHA) while AIC goes to 5-14-4 (2-11-4 AHA).
Senior goaltender Matt Grogan finished with 32 saves on Saturday night, including 15 in the second period. Grogan stopped 21 shots in Friday's victory giving him 53 for the weekend. On the season Grogan stands at 5-2-2 with a 1.89 goals against average and a .941 save percentage.
AIC goaltender Ben Meisner finished with 39 saves on the night.
UConn outshot AIC, 9-8, in the first period and was unsuccessful on three power-play opportunities. On the night, UConn finished 1-6 with the man advantage.
AIC scored the game's opening goal at 8:29 of the first period. Steve Mele scored with assists to Brandon Lubin and Nathan Sliwinski.
AIC outshot the Huskies in the second period, 16-13. Both teams finished the middle stanza 0-1 on the power play.
Connecticut dominated the third period, doubling up the Yellow Jackets in shots, 16-8. The constant pressure paid off at 11:35 when Cody Sharib beat Meisner in front for his team-leading seventh goal of the year. Sophomore Jacob Poe assisted on the play, his 11th of the season.
Connecticut outshot AIC in overtime, 2-1, but failed to beat Meisner and left with one point in the standings.
