STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's hockey team dropped a 2-1 result at Sacred Heart in overtime tonight at the Webster Bank Arena in Harbor Yards. Sacred Heart forward Matt Gingera scored the game-winning goal at 4:25 of overtime.
The loss dropped UConn to 12-15-3 (11-10-2 AHA) while Sacred Heart improved to 3-24-3 (2-18-3 AHA).
UConn freshman forward Cody Sharib scored the lone goal for Connecticut 2:02 into the third period to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Marcello Ranallo assisted on the play. The Pioneers responded just 1:30 later to even the score, sending the game into overtime.
In the overtime session, Sacred Heart outshot the Huskies 4-2 with Matt Gingera giving the Pioneers the two points in the standings with just 35 seconds remaining in the contest.
After scoring 10 combined goals in a 5-5 tie on Friday night in Storrs, the two teams failed to get on the scoreboard after 40 minutes.
Each team recorded 19 shots after 40 minutes and Sacred Heart finished the game with a 37-32 advantage overall.
Connecticut will play host to Bentley on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Freitas Ice Forum. Admission is free for all UConn students with a valid student ID.
