STORRS, Conn. - To celebrate Senior Night at Freitas Ice Forum, senior defenseman Brad Cooper notched a hat trick, including two goals in the third period. UConn ends the regular season with a 13-17-4 record and will face Canisius in the opening round of the AHA playoffs beginning Friday in Storrs.
Tonight's result, coupled with last night's tie and the results around the league put UConn in eighth place in the AHA standings.
UConn outshot AIC, 40-23, including a 16-5 margin in the third period.
The senior class was outstanding on the night, nothing five points, including four goals. Corey Jendras added a goal while senior defenseman Chris Waterstradt earned an assist on Jendras' opening goal.
Jendras opened the scoring 2:15 into the game with assists going to Evan Carriere and Waterstradt. AIC evened the scoring at 12:57 with a power-play goal to send the teams into the locker room tied, 1-1.
Cooper put home his first goal 14:39 into the second period. AIC evened once again at 16:37.
The third period was all UConn, however, with Cooper putting Connecticut ahead 3-2 just 1:24 into the final stanza. Cooper was able to snipe the top corner for his second goal of the season.
AIC closed the deficit to one with another power-play strike at 13:48 but Cooper sealed the deal, finishing off his incredible hat trick at 17:32 with another unassisted tally.
UConn will host Canisius Friday night at 7:05 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
