STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's hockey team traveled to Nashua, N.H. tonight and defeated UMass Lowell in overtime, 3-2. Senior Marcello Ranallo notched the game-winning goal. Junior Garrett Bartus recorded 39 saves. UConn improved to 2-1-1 on the season while UMass Lowell dropped to 2-1-0.
The Huskies squandered a 2-0 lead but generated the game-winner just 1:18 into the overtime period.
After one period, UMass Lowell had doubled up UConn in shots on goal at 10-5, but the Huskies were ahead on the scoreboard, 1-0.
Connecticut's top line combined to make it 2-0 with a power-play goal from leading scorer Brant Harris at 3:59 of the second period. Harris was assisted by Cole Schneider and Sean Ambrosie. All-three players have six points on the season with Harris notching five goals.
UMass Lowell cut UConn's lead in half at 9:44 of the second period with a power-play goal from Michael Budd.
After two periods, Bartus had stopped 24 shots with UMass Lowell goaltender Brian Robbins saving 12.
UMass Lowell found the equalizer 3:55 into the third period. Connecticut was down in shots after 60 minutes, 39-19.
Ranallo notched his first goal of the season 1:18 into overtime. He was assisted by sophomores Jordan Sims and Rui Encarnacao. Ranallo, an assistant captain, notched his first game-winning goal since November 7, 2009 against AIC.
The Huskies will get back in action on Saturday at No. 13 Merrimack. That game begins at 7 p.m. in North Andover, Mass.
