MANKATO, Minn. - Teddy Blueger scored a first period goal while Dylan Margonari score in the second to lead Minnesota State to a 2-1 men's ice hockey victory over the University of Connecticut on Friday night before a crowd of 3,829 at the Verizon Wireless Center.

The game was the season-opener for the Huskies and the debut of new head coach Mike Cavanaugh. Minnesota State is ranked 18th in the country and improves its record to 1-2 on the season.

Blueger opened the scoring for the Mavericks with a power play goal with 5:17 left in the first period as Johnny McInnis and Matt Leitner picked up assists. Minnesota State made it 2-0 6:02 into the second period as Dylan Margonari scored with assists to Josh Nelson and the second of the game for McInnis.

Senior Jordan Sims (Toronto, Ont.) scored UConn's only goal in the third period with assists from freshman Brett Skibba (Verona, Wis.) and junior Jacob Poe (Arlington, Texas).

Senior Matt Grogan (Gilbert, Ariz.) made 29 saves for the Huskies in goal. Minnesota State outshot the Huskies by a 31-17 count while the Mavericks scored on one of three power play opportunities while the Huskies were 0-2 on the power play. Stephon Williams made 16 saves in goal for the Mavericks.

The two teams conclude their weekend series on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. The game can be heard on WHUS 91.-7 FM radio.
