MANKATO, Minn. - Minnesota State outshot UConn by a 48-17 margin as it posted a 6-1 win over the Husky men’s ice hockey team on Saturday night in the second contest of a two-game weekend series. UConn falls to 0-2 on the season while the No. 18 nationally-ranked Mavericks are 2-2.
The Mavericks led 3-1 after the first period by scoring the first two goals of the game but the Huskies cut it to 2-1 with 7:58 left in the first on a power play goal by senior Jordan Sims (Toronto, Ont.). The goal was Sims’ second of the season as he also scored UConn’s only goal in Friday night’s 2-1 Husky loss in the first game of the series. Junior Jacob Poe (Arlington, Texas) and senior Billy Latta (West Chester, Pa.) picked up assists on the goal.
Jean-Paul Lafontaine and Bryce Gervais scored the first two goals of the game for Minnesota State while Dylan Margonari made it 3-1 with 14 seconds left in the first period.
The second period was scoreless and Minnesota State scored three in the third period to seal the win. Casey Nelson, Chase Grant and Jordan Nelson were the three scorers.
Senior Matt Grogan (Gilbert, Ariz.) made 42 saves in goal for UConn while Stephon Williams had 16 for Minnesota State. Both teams converted on one of three power play opportunities.
The Huskies return to action on Friday when they open their home season against 2012 Frozen Four participant Union at 7:00 p.m. at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs.
