NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. - The University of Connecticut men's hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision at Niagara on Friday night and fell to 0-3-1 (0-2-0 AHA). With the victory, Niagara improved to 3-2-3 (2-0-0 AHA).
Connecticut finished with a 34-30 edge in shots but Niagara netminder Carsen Chubak stopped all 34 attempts to earn the shutout. UConn senior goaltender Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) finished with 27 saves in the loss.
Niagara forward Giancarlo Iuorio notched a hat trick to lead the Purple Eagles.
Niagara opened the scoring just 55 seconds into the contest with Iuorio's first of the night and fourth of the season. He was assisted by Ryan Murphy and Marc Zanette.
UConn freshman Tyler Helton had a chance to even the score midway through the period but his shot aimed five-hole on a breakaway was denied by Chusak. The two teams each notched 11 shots in the opening period.
Iuorio added his second of the night to go up 2-0 just 1:10 into the second period. Iuorio and Zanette came in to the UConn zone on a two-on-one before Iurio beat Bartus left side.
Niagara finished the scoring as Iuorio closed off his hat trick with a short-handed tally at 3:14 of the second period. Iuorio's goal came just seconds after UConn junior Billy Latta (West Chester, Pa.) rang a shot off the cross bar from the top of the right face-off circle.
The two teams will face off again on Saturday night at 7:05. That game can be heard on WHUS.org with a live video broadcast available at uconnhuskies.com.
