STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's hockey team finished a weekend series at Mercyhurst in Erie, Pa. and dropped a 2-0 result to the host Lakers. UConn falls to 3-4-1 (2-2-0 AHA) while Mercyhurst its overall record to 4-4-0 (3-0-0 AHA).
The two teams played up and down hockey for the opening two periods with UConn generating 29 shots in the first 40 minutes.
Connecticut outshot Mercyhurst for both of the first two periods but dropped the edge in shots in the third, 18-12.
The Lakers found the game's only goals in the third period. Matthew Zay put home the game-winning goal on the power-play at 8:03.
Connecticut put Bartus on the bench for the final 1:15 looking for the equalizer but couldn't beat Mercyhurst goaltender Max Strang. The Lakers would go on to score in the empty net at 19:59.
Strang finished the night with 41 saves to earn the shutout.
UConn will be in action Saturday, November 12 at AIC in Springfield, Mass. That game is set to begin at 7:05 p.m.
