STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut freshman Shawn Pauly (Bellingham, Wash.) was named the Atlantic Hockey Association Rookie of the Week and senior Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) was tabbed AHA Goaltender of the Week after the Huskies swept Penn State in Storrs last weekend.
Bartus returned to action after a three-game break to stop 42 straight shots in a 4-1 victory over Penn State on Saturday night. Bartus allowed the game's opening goal on the first shot of the night during a 3-on-2 rush just 13 seconds into the contest. He then went on to stop 42 straight, including seven on the penalty kill and 18 in the third period.
Bartus is UConn's all-time leader in wins (40) and saves (3,200). In 2012-13, Bartus owns a 5-7-1 record based on a 2.43 goals against average and a .923 save percentage.
Pauly tallied two goals over the weekend, the first two of his career, and a plus-two rating. Pauly notched a go-ahead goal on Friday and the game-tying goal on Saturday. Pauly's first career goal came with the score tied 2-2 in Friday's match which resulted in a 4-3 UConn victory. In Saturday's 4-1 victory, Pauly scored 1:22 into the game to even the score at 1-1 after Penn State scored just 13 seconds in.
In his rookie campaign, Pauly ranks tied for second on the team with five assists and his seven points rank tied for third. Pauly has registered points in four of the last five games.
The Huskies will play at Robert Morris (10-5-2, 5-4-1 AHA) on Friday and Saturday, January 11 and 12. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard at WHUS.org. There will be live video available at uconnhuskies.com.
