    Quinnipiac Powers Past Men’s Hockey, 4-1




    STORRS, Conn. (Jan. 15) –
    The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team suffered a 4-1 loss to Quinnipiac in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday night before a crowd of 1,454 at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. The Huskies fall to 5-15-2 on the season with a 4-7-1 record in Atlantic Hockey, while QU moves to 7-11-3 on the year with a 5-6-1 record in the conference.

    The Bobcats opened the scoring on a power play at 3:57 in the first period as Chris White’s one-timer from Reid Cashman and Dan LeFort found the back of the UConn net. Peter Alden moved Quinnipiac’s lead to 2-0 just after exiting the penalty box 8:56 into the first, with assists going to Mark Van Vliet and Michael Bordieri. Cashman added a third goal in the stanza at 11:28 with a power play tally from Matt Craig and Van Vliet.

    Quinnipiac opened the second period with a third power play goal at 1:29. Matt Froehlich redirected a shot from the point by Cashman for his seventh of the season. Van Vliet added a secondary assist on the goal, his third helper of the evening.

    Senior captain Tim Olsen (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) put UConn on the board 13 seconds into the third period with his seventh of the year from sophomore Cole Koidahl (Minneapolis, Minn.) and freshman John Stockler (Princeton, Minn.).

    The Bobcats outshot Connecticut 33-25. Freshman Brad Smith (Detroit, Mich) made 29 saves in net for UConn and Jamie Holden stopped 24 shots for Quinnipiac.

    The Huskies next play host to Sacred Heart in a conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 7:05 p.m.
