STORRS, Conn. - UConn junior goaltender Rob Nichols (Dallas, Texas) was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week annouced by the league office on Monday.  Nichols takes home the honor for the second time this season.

Nichols stopped 82 of the 83 shots he faced over the weekend to lead the Huskies to a win and a tie at the University of Maine to grab three of four points in the Hockey East standings.  Nichols opened the weekend making a career-high 44 saves as the Huskies posted a 1-0 win over the Black Bears.  The shutout gave the goaltender his second-straight shutout after getting a 3-0 win against Arizona State a week earlier.  Nichols became the first UConn goaltender to ever post consecutive shutouts.  On Saturday, he turned in 38 saves, 16 coming in the third period and overtime, as the Huskies skated to a 1-1 tie with Maine.

On the season, Nichols has a 2.75 goals against average and a .913 save percentage.  He has made 596 saves this season, fifth in the nation.

The Huskies are back at home this Friday night when they play host to Vermont at the XL Center. Game time is scheduled for 8:30 pm.
