STORRS, Conn. - UConn freshman Max Letunov (Moscow, Russia) was named the Hockey East Warrior Hockey Player of the Week on Monday afternoon by the league office. Letunov collects his first player of the week nod after winning the rookie honor twice already this season.
Letunov helped lead the Huskies to a 1-0-1 week with a 3-1 win over Brown University and a 2-2 tie at Merrimack on Saturday night to grab a point and put the Huskies in a four-way tie for sixth place in the Hockey East standings. Letunov scored a pair of goals on the week to extend a pair of streaks as well as set a new UConn Division I rookie goal scoring record.
In last Tuesday's win over Brown, Letunov put the finishing touches on a 3-1 victory by scoring an empty net goal for his 14th goal on the season. On Saturday night, Letunov gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead in the third period by burying a rebound off an odd-man rush for his 15th, extending his point scoring streak to eight-straight games. He has scored a goal in six-straight games with seven goals coming during that stretch.
His 15th goal breaks the UConn Division I mark of 14 set by Andrew Olson during the 2007-08 season. The all-time rookie goal mark is 22 goals set by Dave L'Ecuyer in 1978-79. Letunov is closing in on the Division I rookie point mark of 33 held by Cole Schneider (2010-11). He leads the team with 31 points (15g/16a) on the season.
Letunov currently is tied for fifth in the league in scoring and is second among Hockey East rookies. He is tied for third in the nation among freshmen in points.
The Huskies will take on defending national champion Providence this weekend in a home-and-home series. UConn heads to Providence on Friday night and will host the Friars on Saturday at the XL Center at 5:05 pm.
