STORRS, Conn. - UConn freshmen Joseph Masonius (Spring Lake, N.J.) was named the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week announced by Hockey East on Monday. It is the first weekly award for Masonius and he joins Max Letunov (Moscow, Russia) and Tage Thompson (Orange, Conn.) as the third UConn rookie this season to win the award.
Masonius led all Hockey East defensemen last week with four points as the Huskies swept New Hampshire and earned a home playoff series in the opening round. On the weekend, he had his fifth and sixth multi-point efforts of the season. On Friday, Masonius set up Corey Ronan (Franklin, Mass.) for a breakaway chance that resulted in an early shorthanded goal. Masonius then sealed the Huskies 4-1 win late by scoring on the empty net from deep in the UConn zone shorthanded as UNH had the goaltender pulled for a 6x4 power play advantage.
On Saturday at New Hampshire, Masonius set up Thompson for a one-timer for his 13 power play goal this season and then delivered a perfect feed from behind the net to Joey Ferriss (Novi, Mich.) in front to tie the game at 4-4 late in the third. Masonius finished the weekend with a +2 rating, a power play assist and a short handed goal for the Huskies.
Masonius is fourth on the team in scoring with 20 points on six goals and 14 assists. He is now tied for ninth among HEA defensemen in scoring and is 12th among league rookies.
