Former University of Connecticut men’s ice hockey captain Matt Carlin ’89 will receive the Red O'Neill Award on Tuesday, April 19, when The UConn Club hosts its 63rd Annual Awards Ceremony at the Jorgensen Center For The Performing Arts on campus.
The Red O'Neill Award is given annually by The UConn Club to a former Husky student-athlete who has mirrored the Red O'Neill-type attributes of character, leadership, athletic ability, and later, a successful career.
The UConn Club Awards Program begins with a social hour at 6:00 p.m. with heavy hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. The awards ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m. with a dessert reception to follow. Carlin currently serves as the Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Previous to his appointment at the DPS, Carlin was the CEO of Resource Options Inc. Under his direction, ROI became a leader in the placement of construction, environmental, and design professionals throughout the Northeast. He successfully opened branch offices in West Caldwell, N.J., Stratford, Conn. and Wethersfield, Conn., Londonderry, N.H, Raleigh, N.C. and Queens, N.Y.
Carlin enjoyed an outstanding career as a Husky as he lettered from 1984-88 and served as a captain his senior season.
After graduating from UConn as a Dean’s List student, Carlin became the head ice hockey coach at Worcester Academy and had assistant coaching and recruiting coordinator positions at both Dartmouth College and Cornell University.
Carlin is an active member of civic, local and national organizations. He was named to the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education in 2000 and chaired a task force on the Quality of Student Life. He was also selected to serve as a member of the Massachusetts State College Building Authority in 2002.
In 2005, Carlin was appointed to the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees, where he served as Chair of the Committee on Athletics, Committee on Academic and Student Affairs and the Governance Committee. Carlin was a member of the University of Massachusetts Building Authority from 2006 to 2010.
Carlin is a member of the Environmental Business Council and served on the Board of Directors from 2003-2007. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for Alpha Analytical Inc.
In 2003, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Staffing Association. He began his tenure on the Board as Legislative Chair and one year later he was elected President of the Association.
A native of Natick, Mass., Carlin attended The Rivers School, in Weston, Mass., and played ice hockey, football and baseball. Carlin resides in Sudbury, Mass., with his wife Nicole and two daughters Regan (14) and Jamie (12) and son Jim (11).
